An ornamental pond does not need to cover dozens of metres. A few square metres, the correct depth and well-matched plants are enough to create a spot by the house where you will most like to sit in summer. Adding a stream or waterfall also brings the sound of water.
I would like a pond design
We build ornamental ponds ranging from approximately 4 m2 up to the size of a small pond. For smaller ponds, depth matters more than surface area: below 60 cm, water overheats in summer and freezes solid to the bottom in winter, so plants and any fish cannot survive the winter. Therefore, even a "mini" pond by the terrace is designed with a deeper section around 80 to 100 cm and shallow terraces for plants.
A custom foil pond allows you to precisely copy the shape of a terrace or flower bed and add a stone edge, beach area or wooden jetty. Prefabricated plastic tubs have a fixed shape and shallow bottom; they are more suitable as a temporary solution, so we do not build them.
The stream usually starts at an elevated part of the garden and ends in the pond; a pump returns the water to the start. Cascades made from split stone create a sound that drowns out street noise, while the flowing water becomes oxygenated and is less prone to algae growth. A filtration zone with gravel and plants can be hidden within the stream, allowing it to function as a filter.
The waterfall should be proportional to the pond. A strong flow in a small basin will stir up silt and evaporate large amounts of water. Therefore, we calculate the pump's flow rate based on the pond's volume and the cascade height, not on what is currently on offer.
We plant in gravel without soil to prevent nutrients from entering the water. We select water lilies according to pond depth and size; for small areas we use dwarf cultivars that will not cover the entire surface.
A small ornamental pond without fish can function with plants alone and no equipment if it has sufficient depth, at least one-third of the surface shaded by leaves, and is not situated under deciduous trees. As soon as you want fish, crystal-clear water or a waterfall, a pump and a simple filter already make sense. During the design phase we will tell you which category your idea falls into.
A sensible minimum is approximately 4 m2 and a depth of around 80 cm at the deepest point. Smaller ponds overheat and freeze through. There is no upper limit; larger ponds are more stable and require less maintenance.
Yes, if the pond is over one metre deep and has filtration: goldfish, crucian carp or tench. Koi carp and sturgeon belong in a separate koi pond with equipment sized for fish.
Custom foil pond: any shape, correct depths and terraces, foil lifespan of decades. Plastic tubs have a fixed shape, shallow bottom and limited size; they are mostly used for DIY projects. Therefore we build only foil ponds.
We control the sound by adjusting the height and shape of the cascade. Low, wide steps create a quiet murmur, while a higher drop produces a more pronounced sound that drowns out street noise. The pump can be switched off at night or its flow regulated.
