Swimming pond: swimming in water purified by plants

Chlorine-free water that provides pleasant cooling in summer and looks like an integral part of the garden all year round. We will design the zone proportions according to your plot and build a pond suitable for actual swimming.

How a swimming pond works

The swimming pond is divided into two sections. Swimming zone It is approximately two metres deep, has steep walls and a clean bottom free of plants to allow swimming and prevent the water from overheating in summer. Regeneration zone It is shallow, ranging from a few centimetres to approximately 80 cm, filled with gravel and planted with wetland plants. This is where the water is purified: plant roots and microorganisms in the gravel remove nutrients from the water, so algae have nothing to grow on.

Both zones are connected by a pump. The surface skimmer removes leaves and pollen before they sink to the bottom, and the water returns via the regeneration zone. For ponds with a smaller regeneration area, we add technical filtration to take over part of the plants' work.

The surface area ratio for private swimming ponds is usually roughly half and half. If the swimming section needs to be significantly larger, we address this with greater depth and filtration, not by reducing space for plants. This is the most common mistake in pond construction; such ponds turn green in their first summer.

How large a pond do you need

For swimming, allow for a total area of usually 50 to 70 m2, i.e., for example 10 x 6 metres. The swimming section will then be approximately 25 to 35 m2, which is sufficient for several people. We also build smaller swimming ponds, but with a higher proportion of technical equipment and bearing in mind that water heats up faster in a small volume.

  • Water access pointwooden jetty with steps, stone stairs or a gentle gravel beach for children.
  • Locationsunlight for at least part of the day, but not under deciduous trees. Minimum distance from the plot boundary is 2 metres.
  • Access for machinery. The excavator requires an access route of approximately 2 metres. If it cannot reach the site, we dig with a mini-excavator, which takes longer.

What we build ponds from

  • Liner Suitable for ponds, PVC or EPDM, thickness at least 1 mm, welded joints, laid on protective geotextile. Manufacturers typically guarantee it for 10 years or more; in practice it lasts significantly longer because we cover it with gravel and stone to protect it from the sun.
  • Gravel and stonewashed gravel for the regeneration zone, quarry or river stone for banks and steps. Choose from samples of quarries in your region.
  • Equipmentskimmer, low-consumption pump, underground pipework. For smaller ponds we add a gravel or biological filter, and optionally a UV lamp.
  • Plants: irises, water lilies, yellow flag irises, marsh marigolds and lotus according to depth. We plant so that the zone becomes established in the first season and functions fully in the second.

What affects the price of a swimming pond

The price is determined mainly by area and depth, as they determine the excavation volume, foil metres and gravel quantity. Other factors also come into play terrain (flat ground versus slope, rock, groundwater) access for machinery, entry method (a jetty or stone steps cost more than a gravel beach) and scope of equipment. Soil removal is a separate item; it often pays to use it for landscaping the surroundings.

After the survey you will receive a detailed estimate showing each of these items. The price is final; additional charges only by agreement if something not visible from the surface is found during excavation.

Swimming pond or pool

A pond offers soft water without chlorine, a natural appearance all year round, life around the water and lower operating costs as it requires neither heating nor chemicals. A pool has a constant temperature, crystal-clear water and a smaller footprint. If after reading this the pool wins, our colleagues will build it for you. novybazen.czA compromise is swimming biotope with a higher proportion of plants or, conversely, a natural pool with technical filtration and minimal plant life.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to build a swimming pond?

Excavation and liner installation can be carried out from spring to autumn as long as the ground is not frozen. Plants establish best between May and September. If the pond is completed in autumn, it will settle over winter and operate fully by the first summer.

How warm is the water in a swimming pond?

Similar to a natural swimming pond: in summer typically 20 to 26 degrees depending on weather and depth. The deep swimming zone keeps the water pleasantly cool even on hot days. Heating is not used for ponds; warm water promotes algae growth.

Is the water in the pond crystal clear?

A healthy swimming pond has water that is clear to a depth of one to two metres, with a natural greenish or brownish tint depending on the bottom and plants. It is not sterile blue pool water, but water in which aquatic plants and small animals live.

Can children and dogs swim in a swimming pond?

Children are welcome under supervision, as with any water feature. A gradual gravel beach provides the best entry for them. Dogs mainly cause issues through what they carry on their fur and claws; the liner will not be damaged if covered with gravel. We recommend designating a specific entry point for dogs.
